As a resort community the Rural Municipality of Victoria Beach has a wide variety of activities, programs and services that promote an active lifestyle. The RM Council is committed to ensuring that all citizens, guests and casual visitors have equal access to our programs and services, regardless of their abilities, by identifying and removing barriers that may interfere with participation in the life of the community. Council is committed to having an environment that is welcoming, supportive and respectful of the dignity and independence of people with a variety of abilities. Making improvements to the accessibility to the amenities of life at Victoria Beach is essential for the health and well-being of all property owners, renters and visitors who want to take advantage of the benefits of the lifestyle that Victoria Beach offers.
As part of its commitment to meeting the requirements of the Accessibility for Manitobans Act (link), Council has established an Accessibility Committee made up of volunteers from the community with experience and expertise in accessibility issues. The Committee has been given the responsibility to identify barriers in the community and recommend possible solutions for removing those barriers. Some of these initiatives include:
- Improvements to ramps and stairs at Municipal buildings
- Council members and all employees have received training with respect accessibility issues
- Council has made mobility scooters available for rent during the restricted driving period
- People who are unable to safely enter a taxi during the restricted period may apply for a permit to operate their vehicle during the Restricted Period. (see link the Application below)
- An accessible washroom is available at Pier Point
- There is an accessible washroom and mobi-mats at Pitt Road in Albert Beach that allows wheelchair and mobility scooters to have access to the use of the beach
Other progressive measures that have been implemented and plans for future projects can be found in the Accessibility Plan. (link).
Council is committed to continuing its efforts to improve accessibility in our municipality but it is truly a community effort – if you see anything that may present a barrier to people living with disabilities please feel free to contact any of the councillors. It takes a whole community effort to improve accessibility in Victoria Beach.
